North Carolina Amendment 1
North Carolina Amendment 1 (often referred to as simply Amendment 1) was a legislatively referred constitutional amendment in North Carolina that proposed to amend the North Carolina Constitution that makes it unconstitutional for the state to recognize or perform same-sex marriages or civil unions. On May 8, 2012, North Carolina voters approved the amendment, 61.04% to 38.96%, with a voter turnout of 34.66%.
State law already defined marriage as being between a man and a woman.〔("NC General Statutes, Chapter 51" ). North Carolina General Assembly.〕 The amendment was found unconstitutional in federal court on October 10, 2014.
